Refusing the goose quill a boastful quota

Of indelible ink and parchment paper

Finding a sparrow’s nest overturned

Inside a carefully sculpted Cupid’s

Birdbath in the back garden

Pulling tiny fire ants from a disproportionate

Patchwork sagging flesh and threadbare clothes

Collecting swear words from a dictionary

Of perfunctory Elizabethan odes

And somewhat loathsome-sounding oaths

Refusing the cat caught knocking over a flower pot

Filled with nasturtiums and goodwill geraniums

Her day in court while peeling an onion

With a blunt-edged cheese knife

And then crying over split  infinitives.
